Assembly RESOLUTION—Commending former Assemblyman George Holbrook Hawes for his public service.

 

1-1    Whereas, George Holbrook Hawes, born in Skowhegan, Maine, on

1-2  April 10, 1904, has served the people of the State of Nevada in various

1-3  public capacities for over 50 years; and

1-4    Whereas, George Hawes was elected by the residents of White Pine

1-5  County as a member of the Nevada Assembly from 1951 through 1954;

1-6  and

1-7    Whereas, During his years of legislative service, George Hawes served

1-8  on the Assembly Standing Committees on Fish and Game, Labor, Public

1-9  Health and Public Morals, and State Libraries; and

1-10    Whereas, George Hawes sponsored a number of important pieces of

1-11  legislation during his years of legislative service, including creation of the

1-12  Roadside Park and Rest Area Program along Nevada’s highways and

1-13  providing for Nevada’s Fish and Game Commission to establish

1-14  Cooperative Game Management Areas in cooperation with private

1-15  landowners; and

1-16    Whereas, George Hawes was the primary sponsor of important

1-17  legislation during the 1953 Legislative session, which included amending

1-18  the Motor Vehicle Fuel Tax Act to provide that the county’s share of the

1-19  tax not be used for administrative expenses, conferring upon the Chief

1-20  Parole and Probation Officer the full powers of a peace officer throughout


2-1  the state, and amending the Fish and Game Law to provide that beaver and

2-2  otter could not be taken in the open trapping season; and

2-3    Whereas, During the campaign for the presidential election in 1952,

2-4  George Hawes arranged and coordinated one of the largest public

2-5  celebrations in the history of Ely and White Pine County in honor of

2-6  Patricia Ryan Nixon, a native of White Pine County and wife of the vice

2-7  presidential nominee, Richard Milhous Nixon, the running mate of

2-8  presidential candidate, General Dwight David Eisenhower; and

2-9    Whereas, In 1988, at the age of 84, George Hawes was elected by the

2-10  voters as a hospital trustee for the Carson-Tahoe Hospital and, during the

2-11  10 years he served as a trustee, was instrumental in such projects of the

2-12  hospital as the construction of the women’s and children’s wing, purchase

2-13  of the Sierra Professional Center, establishment of the Carson

2-14  Rehabilitation Center and construction of the Minden Medical Center;

2-15  now, therefore, be it

2-16    Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, That

2-17  George Holbrook Hawes is hereby commended by the members of the 71st

2-18  session of the Nevada Legislature for his many years of service to others,

2-19  including the 4 years he served the residents of Nevada in the Nevada

2-20  Assembly; and be it further

2-21    Resolved, That George Hawes is congratulated for serving as an

2-22  inspiration to all and as a role model for seniors throughout this state to

2-23  remain actively involved in their community; and be it further

2-24    Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit

2-25  a copy of this resolution to George Hawes as he begins his 98th year and

2-26  continues in his service to others.
