Assembly RESOLUTION—Memorializing former Assemblywoman Louise Aloys Smith.

 

1-1    Whereas, The members of the Nevada Assembly were saddened
to learn of the loss of former Assemblywoman Louise Aloys Smith on
May 12, 1999; and

1-2    Whereas, Louise Aloys Smith was a native Nevadan, born in Lovelock

1-3  on July 29, 1917, to Dr. Eugene Kneeland Smith and Kathleen O’Sullivan

1-4  Smith; and

1-5    Whereas, Louise enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps in 1943,

1-6  achieving the rank of sergeant and serving as a recruiter and as a

1-7  rehabilitation counselor in military hospitals until her honorable discharge

1-8  in 1946, and was honored with the World War II Victory Medal, Good

1-9  Conduct Medal and American Campaign Medal; and

1-10    Whereas, Elected in 1949 as Assemblywoman from Pershing County,

1-11  Louise served on eight standing committees, including Veterans Affairs,

1-12  Legislative Functions, Social Welfare, State Library and State Publicity;

1-13  and

1-14    Whereas, Leadership positions at that time were awarded to women

1-15  mainly for ceremonial purposes, however, following her reelection in 1951,

1-16  Louise had the honor of being the first woman to be elected as Speaker Pro

1-17  Tempore of the Assembly by her fellow assemblymen; and

1-18    Whereas, After retiring from Sierra Pacific Power Company following

1-19  30 years of dedicated employment, Louise remained active in many

1-20  organizations in her community, including the Pink Ladies Hospital

1-21  Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies


2-1  Auxiliary, Lovelock Study Club and Beta Sigma Phi, an international

2-2  women’s social, cultural and service organization; and

2-3    Whereas, Continuing her lifelong love of music, with a magnificent

2-4  soprano voice cultivated through operatic training as a student in the San

2-5  Francisco Bay area, Louise performed at weddings, funerals, and other

2-6  community and church events, as well as serving as a choir director; and

2-7    Whereas, As the co-founder of the Desert Little Theater, Louise acted

2-8  in the capacity of performer and director in more than a decade of

2-9  performances by the amateur theater group; and

2-10    Whereas, Committed to the importance of reading and literacy in her

2-11  community, Louise served as a member on the Board of Trustees of the

2-12  Pershing County Library, volunteered her time with the adult literacy and

2-13  children’s story-telling programs, and was instrumental in obtaining

2-14  funding for a new library building; and

2-15    Whereas, In 1988, Louise Aloys Smith was awarded the Woman of

2-16  the Year Award, given annually in Reno to a Nevada woman with a

2-17  lifetime of community service and achievement; now, therefore, be it

2-18    Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, That the

2-19  members of the Assembly of the 71st session of the Nevada Legislature

2-20  offer their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Louise Aloys

2-21  Smith; and be it further

2-22    Resolved, That Louise Aloys Smith will long be remembered for her

2-23  dedication to her community and this state; and be it further

2-24    Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit a copy of

2-25  this resolution to Louise Aloys Smith’s long-time friend, Leola Armstrong.
