AN ACT relating to victims of crime; removing certain limitations on the amount of compensation that may be provided for the loss of earnings and support and for the funeral expenses of certain victims of crime; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

1-1    Section 1. NRS 217.200 is hereby amended to read as follows:

1-2    217.200  1.  The compensation officer may order the payment of

1-3  compensation and the award of a governor’s certificate for meritorious

1-4  citizen’s service to a victim for:

1-5    (a) Medical expenses, expenses for psychological counseling and

1-6  nonmedical remedial care and treatment rendered in accordance with a

1-7  religious method of healing, that are actually and reasonably incurred as a

1-8  result of the personal injury or death of the victim;

1-9    (b) Loss of earnings or support [not to exceed $300 per week] that is

1-10  reasonably incurred as a result of the total or partial incapacity of the

1-11  victim for not longer than 52 weeks;

1-12    (c) Pecuniary loss to the dependents of a deceased victim;

1-13    (d) Funeral expenses[, not in excess of $2,500,] that are actually and

1-14  reasonably incurred as a result of the death of the victim; and

1-15    (e) Another loss which results from the personal injury or death of the

1-16  victim and which the compensation officer determines to be reasonable.


2-1    2.  The compensation officer may order the payment of compensation

2-2  for a person who pays the funeral expenses of a victim.

2-3    3.  An award must not be made for more than $50,000.

2-4    Sec. 2.  This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
