AN ACT relating to the City of Reno; amending the city charter by increasing the term of office of municipal judges; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

1-1    Section 1. Section 5.010 of the charter of the City of Reno, being

1-2  chapter 662, Statutes of Nevada 1971, as last amended by chapter 9,

1-3  Statutes of Nevada 1993, at page 21, is hereby amended to read as follows:

1-4  Sec. 5.010  General elections.

1-5  1.  [On the Tuesday after the first Monday in June 1995, there

1-6  must be elected by the qualified voters of the city, at a general

1-7  municipal election to be held for that purpose, a mayor, councilmen

1-8  from the second and fourth wards, a municipal judge and a city

1-9  attorney, all of whom hold office until their successors have been

1-10  elected and qualified pursuant to subsection 4.

1-11  2.  On the Tuesday after the first Monday in June 1993, there must

1-12  be elected by the qualified voters of the city, at a general municipal

1-13  election to be held for that purpose, councilmen from the first, third

1-14  and fifth wards, one councilman at large and two municipal judges, all

1-15  of whom hold office until their successors have been elected and

1-16  qualified pursuant to subsection 3.

1-17  3.  On the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 1996, and

1-18  at each successive interval of 4 years, there must be elected by the

1-19  qualified voters of the city, at the general election, councilmen from

1-20  the first, third and fifth wards, one councilman at large and two

1-21  municipal judges, all of whom hold office for a term of 4 years and

1-22  until their successors have been elected and qualified.


2-1  4.] On the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 1998, and

2-2  at each successive interval of 4 years, there must be elected by the

2-3  qualified voters of the city, at the general election, a mayor,

2-4  councilmen from the second and fourth wards, a municipal judge and

2-5  a city attorney, all of whom hold office for a term of 4 years and until

2-6  their successors have been elected and qualified[.] pursuant to

2-7  subsection 3 or 4.

2-8  2.  On the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2000,

2-9  and at each successive interval of 4 years, there must be elected by

2-10  the qualified voters of the city, at the general election, councilmen

2-11  from the first, third and fifth wards, one councilman at large and

2-12  two municipal judges, all of whom hold office for a term of 4 years

2-13  and until their successors have been elected and qualified pursuant

2-14  to subsection 5 or 6.

2-15  3.  On the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2002,

2-16  and at each successive interval of 6 years, there must be elected by

2-17  the qualified voters of the city, at the general election, a municipal

2-18  judge, who holds office for a term of 6 years and until his successor

2-19  has been elected and qualified.

2-20  4.  On the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2002,

2-21  and at each successive interval of 4 years, there must be elected by

2-22  the qualified voters of the city, at the general election, a mayor,

2-23  councilmen from the second and fourth wards, and a city attorney,

2-24  all of whom hold office for a term of 4 years and until their

2-25  successors have been elected and qualified.

2-26  5.  On the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2004,

2-27  and at each successive interval of 6 years, there must be elected by

2-28  the qualified voters of the city, at the general election, three

2-29  municipal judges, all of whom hold office for a term of 6 years and

2-30  until their successors have been elected and qualified.

2-31  6.  On the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2004,

2-32  and at each successive interval of 4 years, there must be elected by

2-33  the qualified voters of the city, at the general election, councilmen

2-34  from the first, third and fifth wards and one councilman at large, all

2-35  of whom hold office for a term of 4 years and until their successors

2-36  have been elected and qualified.

2-37    Sec. 2.  This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
