SUMMARY—Makes appropriation to University and Community College System of Nevada to enhance amount budgeted for biennium for special priorities of Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. (BDR S‑1169)

AN ACT making an appropriation to the University and Community College System of Nevada to enhance the amount budgeted for special priorities for the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

   Whereas, One of the primary defining characteristics of the State of Nevada and its quality of life is its mix of arid rangelands and mountains, the scarcity of its natural resources, such as water, and its abundance of precious metals to support its mining industry; and

   Whereas, With approximately 87 percent of its over 70 million acres in the public domain, the residents of this state are stakeholders in the management and use of the rangelands and forest; and

   Whereas, It is imperative that the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Nevada, Reno, work with the Nevada Cooperative Extension, the State Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture to protect our public lands and natural resources and the people that are dependent on these resources for their economic well being; and

   Whereas, Healthy rangelands that meet the needs and values of multiple users and that are managed to meet the needs of future generations must be a priority for all residents of the State of Nevada; now, therefore,

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

1-1    Section 1. 1.  There is hereby appropriated from the state general

1-2  fund to the University and Community College System of Nevada the sum

2-1  of $471,519 to enhance the amount budgeted for the biennium for special

2-2  priorities of the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station and the University

2-3  of Nevada Cooperative Extension to be distributed as follows:

2-4    (a) Fifty percent of the appropriation made by this subsection must be

2-5  used for the program entitled “Sustaining Agriculture as an Economic

2-6  Contributor and Environmental Steward in Nevada Counties” conducted by

2-7  the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension; and

2-8    (b) Fifty percent of the appropriation made by this subsection must be

2-9  used for the program entitled “Nevada Arid Rangelands Initiative”

2-10  conducted by the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station.

2-11    2.  Any remaining balance of the appropriation made by subsection 1

2-12  must not be committed for expenditure after June 30, 2003, and reverts to

2-13  the state general fund as soon as all payments of money committed have

2-14  been made.

2-15    Sec. 2.  This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
