THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN
SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
1-1 Section 1. 1. There is hereby appropriated from the state general
1-2 fund to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education’s fund for
1-3 student loans created pursuant to NRS 397.063:
1-4 For the fiscal year 2001-2002................ $25,000
1-5 For the fiscal year 2002-2003................ $50,000
1-6 2. The three commissioners from the State of Nevada, acting jointly,
1-7 shall use the money appropriated pursuant to subsection 1 solely to provide
1-8 scholarships to 10 students who are certified to study to practice in the
1-9 profession of teaching or nursing.
1-10 3. The scholarships provided pursuant to subsection 2 must be used by
1-11 the student to attend an out-of-state university or community college.
1-12 4. As a condition for receipt of a scholarship, a student must agree to
1-13 practice for at least 1 year in an underserved area of this state in the
1-14 profession in which he is certified to study. The terms and conditions of the
1-15 scholarship, including, without limitation, the terms and conditions for
1-16 repayment of the scholarship, must be set forth in a contract between the
1-17 student and the grantor.
1-18 5. If a student who receives a scholarship does not practice for at least
1-19 1 year in an underserved area of this state in the profession in which he was
1-20 certified to study, the student shall repay the scholarship subject to the
1-21 terms and conditions prescribed pursuant to subsection 6.
2-1 6. The three commissioners from the State of Nevada, acting jointly:
2-2 (a) Shall adopt regulations that prescribe the terms and conditions for
2-3 repayment of a scholarship if a student fails to practice for at least 1 year in
2-4 an underserved area of this state in the profession in which he was certified
2-5 to study.
2-6 (b) May adopt such regulations as are necessary to carry out the
2-7 provisions of this section.
2-8 7. Any balance of the appropriations made by subsection 1 remaining
2-9 at the end of the respective fiscal years must not be committed for
2-10 expenditure after June 30 of the respective fiscal years and reverts to the
2-11 state general fund as soon as all payments of money committed have been
2-12 made.
2-13 Sec. 2. This act becomes effective on July 1, 2001.
