AN ACT relating to education; making appropriations to the Department of Administration for allocation to the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada to provide scholarships for students who are disadvantaged and underrepresented in medical and dental schools within the University of Nevada; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

1-1    Section 1.  1.  There is hereby appropriated from the state general

1-2  fund to the Department of Administration the sum of $200,000. If the

1-3  Interim Finance Committee has approved the criteria for eligibility

1-4  established by the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada pursuant

1-5  to subsection 3, the Department of Administration shall make the following

1-6  allocations to the Board of Regents from this appropriation:

1-7  For the fiscal year 2001-2002.... $50,000

1-8  For the fiscal year 2002-2003.... $50,000

1-9  For the fiscal year 2003-2004.... $50,000

1-10  For the fiscal year 2004-2005... $50,000

1-11    2.  The money allocated to the Board of Regents pursuant to subsection

1-12  1 must be used to provide scholarships to students who:

1-13    (a) Are enrolled in the University of Nevada School of Medicine; and

1-14    (b) Belong to a population of students that the Board of Regents has

1-15  determined is disadvantaged and underrepresented in the University of

1-16  Nevada School of Medicine.


2-1    3.  The Board of Regents shall establish the criteria for eligibility for

2-2  receipt of a scholarship pursuant to subsection 2. The Board of Regents

2-3  shall submit the criteria to the Interim Finance Committee for approval. To

2-4  be eligible for a scholarship, a student must satisfy the requirements set

2-5  forth in subsection 2 and the criteria approved by the Interim Finance

2-6  Committee.

2-7    4.  A scholarship provided pursuant to this section must be used only:

2-8    (a) For the payment of registration fees, laboratory fees and laboratory

2-9  expenses;

2-10    (b) To purchase required textbooks and course materials;

2-11    (c) To pay the living expenses incurred by a student while he attends the

2-12  University of Nevada School of Medicine; and

2-13    (d) For other costs related to the attendance of a student at the

2-14  University of Nevada School of Medicine.

2-15    5.  Any balance of the sum appropriated by subsection 1 remaining at

2-16  the end of the respective fiscal years for allocation must not be committed

2-17  for expenditure after June 30 of the respective fiscal years and reverts to

2-18  the state general fund as soon as all payments of money committed have

2-19  been made.

2-20    Sec. 2.  1.  There is hereby appropriated from the state general fund

2-21  to the Department of Administration the sum of $200,000. If a dental

2-22  school within the University of Nevada is established and has accepted

2-23  students for enrollment, and if the Interim Finance Committee has

2-24  approved the criteria for eligibility established by the Board of Regents of

2-25  the University of Nevada pursuant to subsection 3, the Department of

2-26  Administration shall make the following allocations to the Board of

2-27  Regents from this appropriation:

2-28  For the fiscal year 2002-2003... $50,000

2-29  For the fiscal year 2003-2004... $50,000

2-30  For the fiscal year 2004-2005... $50,000

2-31  For the fiscal year 2005-2006... $50,000

2-32    2.  The money allocated to the Board of Regents pursuant to subsection

2-33  1 must be used to provide scholarships to students who:

2-34    (a) Are enrolled in the dental school; and

2-35    (b) Belong to a population of students that the Board of Regents has

2-36  determined is disadvantaged and underrepresented in the dental school.

2-37    3.  The Board of Regents shall establish the criteria for eligibility for

2-38  receipt of a scholarship pursuant to subsection 2. The Board of Regents

2-39  shall submit the criteria to the Interim Finance Committee for approval. To

2-40  be eligible for a scholarship, a student must satisfy the requirements set

2-41  forth in subsection 2 and the criteria approved by the Interim Finance

2-42  Committee.

2-43    4.  A scholarship provided pursuant to this section must be used only:
