AN ACT making an appropriation to the Nevada Alliance for Defense, Energy and Business for the expansion and enhancement of federally funded science and technology activities in the State of Nevada; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

   Whereas, The Nevada Alliance for Defense, Energy and Business is a nonprofit Nevada corporation that was established in 1992 to identify and promote new federal technology programs and missions for the Nevada Test Site; and

   Whereas, The Board of Directors is composed of representatives from major technology companies, including Bechtel Nevada, Science Applications International Corporation, TRW Environmental Safety Systems and Wackenhut Services, Inc., and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy, Mr. Troy Wade, is Chairman of the Board; and

   Whereas, The Alliance has been successful in bringing new federal programs to the Nevada Test Site and is leading the effort in the transition of the Nevada Test Site from a nuclear testing facility to a national technology research, development and testing center; and

   Whereas, On October 1, 2000, through the Desert Research Institute in Las Vegas, the Nevada Alliance for Defense, Energy and Business received a 3-year grant for $205,000 per year from the U.S. Department of Energy for facilitation, identification and support of new science and technology programs that help diversify our economy and enhance the quality of life of the residents of the State of Nevada; now, therefore,

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:


2-1    Section 1. 1.  There is hereby appropriated from the state general

2-2  fund to the Nevada Alliance for Defense, Energy and Business for the

2-3  expansion and enhancement of federally funded science and technology

2-4  activities in the State of Nevada:

2-5  For the fiscal year 2001-2002.............. $200,000

2-6  For the fiscal year 2002-2003.............. $200,000

2-7    2.  During fiscal years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003, the Nevada Alliance

2-8  for Defense, Energy and Business shall provide semiannual reports to the

2-9  Governor and to the Director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau for

2-10  transmission to the Legislative Commission, on the activities of and any

2-11  recommendations by the Nevada Alliance for Defense, Energy and

2-12  Business.

2-13    3.  The sums appropriated by subsection 1 are available for either fiscal

2-14  year. Any balance of those sums must not be committed for expenditure

2-15  after June 30, 2003, and reverts to the state general fund as soon as all

2-16  payments of money committed have been made.

2-17    Sec. 2.  This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
