AN ACT making an appropriation to the Life Line Family Education Center for continuation of its nonprofit pregnancy assistance, educational and vocational training programs; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

   Whereas, The Life Line Family Education Center is a nonprofit agency offering a unique combination of programs designed to assist at-risk families; and

   Whereas, In 1999, the Life Line Family Education Center assisted over 22,000 persons with family and individual needs, providing vocational and educational training and one-time assistance with food, clothing and housing; and

   Whereas, Designated as a drop-in site for homeless teens, the Life Line Family Education Center remains the only facility in Southern Nevada with on-site daycare which is offered in an effort to make available educational opportunities for pregnant and parenting teens who may otherwise find the challenges of completing high school overwhelming; and

   Whereas, The skills acquired at the Life Line Family Education Center allow participants to reduce their reliance on public assistance programs; and

   Whereas, National research has shown that these types of services provide individuals and families with an increased sense of independence, empowerment and worth resulting in lower rates of child abuse and neglect, drug abuse and criminal involvement; now, therefore,

 

 

 

 


THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

1-1    Section 1.  There is hereby appropriated from the state general fund to

1-2  the Life Line Family Education Center the sum of $800,000 for the

1-3  continuation of its nonprofit pregnancy assistance, educational and

1-4  vocational training programs.

1-5    Sec. 2.  Any remaining balance of the appropriation made by section 1

1-6  of this act must not be committed for expenditure after June 30, 2003, and

1-7  reverts to the state general fund as soon as all payments of money

1-8  committed have been made.

1-9    Sec. 3.  This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
