Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Recognizing February 6, 2001, as Ronald Reagan Day.

1-1    Whereas, Ronald Wilson Reagan was born in the midwestern farming

1-2  town of Tampico, Illinois, on February 6, 1911; and

1-3    Whereas, His job as a radio sports announcer after graduation from

1-4  Eureka College started Ronald Reagan in the public life that would

1-5  eventually lead him to the presidency of the United States; and

1-6    Whereas, Well-known throughout the country as an actor whose film

1-7  career included more than 50 movies, Ronald Reagan’s first official

1-8  leadership role was as President of the Screen Actors Guild, a position he

1-9  held for six 1-year terms; and

1-10    Whereas, The changing political beliefs of Ronald Reagan gradually

1-11  led him to leave his movie career, and he became a spokesman for the

1-12  General Electric Company; and

1-13    Whereas, Ronald Reagan joined the Republican Party in 1962, and in

1-14  1966 he was elected Governor of California, a position which he would

1-15  hold for the next 8 years and which would bring him recognition as a

1-16  politician of national stature; and

1-17    Whereas, After two unsuccessful attempts at the presidency of the

1-18  United States, Ronald Reagan swept all but six states and the District of

1-19  Columbia in the presidential election of 1980 and scored an even greater

1-20  margin of victory in 1984 with the greatest number of electoral votes ever

1-21  tallied by a presidential candidate in the history of American presidential

1-22  elections; and

1-23    Whereas, Inheriting a nation with rampant inflation and high

1-24  unemployment, the theory of supply-side economics, the goal of which was

1-25  to generate growth by stimulating a greater supply of goods and services

1-26  and thereby increase jobs, was a mainstay of the Reagan approach; and

2-1    Whereas, In a remark made during the 1984 campaign, President

2-2  Ronald Reagan commented that he would like to be remembered as

2-3  someone who gave the government back to the people, and he worked

2-4  toward that goal with a bold agenda of restoring accountability and

2-5  common sense to government; and

2-6    Whereas, President Reagan’s social policy agenda for the nation’s

2-7  children helped lower crime and drug use in America’s neighborhoods, and

2-8  his commitment to our armed forces continued to build the national

2-9  strength that he saw as necessary for the protection of freedom in this

2-10  country and throughout the world; and

2-11    Whereas, President Reagan’s vision of “peace through strength” led to

2-12  the end of the Cold War and the ultimate demise of the Soviet Union, thus

2-13  guaranteeing basic human rights for millions of people and easing the

2-14  threat of nuclear war; and

2-15    Whereas, Throughout his years as President, Ronald Reagan displayed

2-16  consistent optimism and the self-confidence that endeared him to millions,

2-17  and even when personal danger touched him, as in the assassination

2-18  attempt in 1981 that left him wounded, he was upbeat and reassuring; and

2-19    Whereas, On February 6, 2001, Ronald Reagan will reach the age of

2-20  90 years, thus becoming the oldest former President in the history of our

2-21  nation; now, therefore, be it

2-22    Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-23  Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada

2-24  Legislature join with the residents of this state and the residents of the

2-25  entire United States in honoring Ronald Reagan for his many contributions

2-26  to our country and in celebrating his 90 years of life; and be it further

2-27    Resolved, That the Nevada Legislature hereby joins the nation in

2-28  recognizing February 6, 2001, as “Ronald Reagan Day”; and be it further

2-29    Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

2-30  of this resolution to former President of the United States, Ronald Reagan,

2-31  and his family.
