throughout the country as an actor whose film
1-7 career included more than 50

1-9 held for six 1-year terms;
and
1-10 Whereas, The changing
political beliefs of Ronald Reagan gradually
1-11 led him to leave his movie
career, and he became a spokesman for the
1-12 General Electric Company;
and
1-13 Whereas, Ronald
Reagan joined the Republican Party in 1962, and in
1-14 1966 he was elected Governor
of California, a position which he would
1-15 hold for the next 8 years
and which would bring him recognition as a
1-16 politician of national
stature; and
1-17 Whereas, After two
unsuccessful attempts at the presidency of the
1-18 United States, Ronald Reagan
swept all but six states and the District of
1-19 Columbia in the presidential
election of 1980 and scored an even greater

with the greatest number of electoral votes ever
1-21 tallied by a presidential

forces continued to build the national
2-9 strength that he saw as
necessary for the protection of freedom in this
2-10 country and throughout the
world; and
2-11 Whereas, President
Reagan’s vision of “peace through strength” led to
2-12 the end of the Cold War and

rights for millions of people and easing the
2-14 threat of nuclear war; and
2-15 Whereas, Throughout
his years as President, Ronald Reagan displayed
2-16 consistent optimism and the
self-confidence that endeared him to millions,
2-17 and even when personal
danger touched him, as in the assassination
2-18 attempt in 1981 that left
him wounded, he was upbeat and reassuring; and
2-19 Whereas, On February
6, 2001, Ronald Reagan will reach the age of
