Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing long-time Nevada Legislator and American Legion leader Archie Pozzi, Jr.
1-1 Whereas, The Nevada State Legislature joins the people of Nevada as
1-2 they remember the life and mourn the loss of Archie Pozzi, Jr., who passed
1-3 away on November 29, 2000; and
1-4 Whereas, Archie Pozzi, Jr., was born on January 7, 1919, in Oakland,
1-5 California, to Leola and Archie Pozzi, Sr., but spent most of his life in
1-6 Carson City, where he starred on the state championship basketball team of
1-7 Carson High School during his senior year in 1936; and
1-8 Whereas, Following his graduation from the University of Washington
1-9 in 1941 where he was senior class president, Archie Pozzi served his
1-10 country in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was discharged
1-11 from the Navy with the rank of lieutenant, one of his most cherished roles;
1-12 and
1-13 Whereas, In 1946, Archie Pozzi joined his father in the family
1-14 business, Pozzi Motor Company, the Carson City Ford dealership, which
1-15 he took over after his father’s death, and in this capacity he joined with
2-1 several other Carson City auto dealers to produce wacky television
2-2 commercials that drew customers away from Reno and succeeded in
2-3 turning auto sales into the biggest sales tax producer in Carson City in the
2-4 1960s; and
2-5 Whereas, A staunch Republican, Archie Pozzi served as an
2-6 Assemblyman from 1955 to 1966 and as a Senator from 1967 to 1974, and
2-7 used his drive and ambition to enact a state sales tax to help pay for
2-8 education, author a bill for a land swap needed to start Western Nevada
2-9 Community College, help create Carson City’s current form of
2-10 consolidated government as a Capital District, defend the rights of state
2-11 employees and support veterans; and
2-12 Whereas, From 1951 to 1954, Archie Pozzi was a member of the
2-13 Nevada State Museum Board and, after leaving the Legislature, served on
2-14 the Carson City Planning Commission for 10 years; and
2-15 Whereas, In addition to his work in the political arena, Archie Pozzi
2-16 was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Kerak Shrine Temple and the
2-17 Carson Host Lions, was active in the Nevada Department of the American
2-18 Legion, was a high school and college basketball referee for over 25 years
2-19 and was named Carson City Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in
2-20 1991; and
2-21 Whereas, Described as having a rare combination of strength and
2-22 humor, Archie Pozzi was known for his quick smile and willingness to
2-23 help get things done; and
2-24 Whereas, Archie Pozzi was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in
2-25 February 2000, and is survived by his children, Bruce and Kathie of
2-26 Anchorage, Alaska, Bob of Reno, Steve of Carson City and Michelle of
2-27 Danville, California, four grandchildren and his sister, Virginia Pozzi
2-28 Furman of Carson City; now, therefore, be it
2-29 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly
2-30 Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada
2-31 Legislature extend to the family of Archie Pozzi, Jr., their sincere
2-32 condolences; and be it further
2-33 Resolved, That the sandstone of the Legislative Building, which
2-34 Archie Pozzi fought to have used in order to match the Capitol Building,
2-35 will be a reminder of the contributions he made that helped shape Carson
2-36 City and Nevada; and be it further
2-37 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy
2-38 of this resolution to the children of Archie Pozzi, Jr.
