1-1 Whereas, In 1784, only 8 years after the signing of the Declaration of
1-2 Independence, the idea for the formation of chambers of commerce in the
1-3 United States originated; and
1-4 Whereas, Two years later, the first chamber was organized, and in
1-5 1911, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce was established; and
1-6 Whereas, For the past 89 years, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce
1-7 has proudly served the Las Vegas businesses, as well as the community as
1-8 a whole, and is now the fourth largest chamber of commerce in the nation,
1-9 with a membership of more than 6,400 business professionals and a
1-10 trained, professional staff of 55; and
1-11 Whereas, The comprehensive mission of this body of businessmen is
1-12 to be “a business organization that protects, fosters, and enhances the
1-13 success of our membership through a focused, collaborative effort”; and
2-1 Whereas, In fulfilling that mission, the Las Vegas Chamber of
2-2 Commerce identifies community needs, problems and opportunities, and
2-3 then develops programs that satisfy those needs, solve those problems and
2-4 seize those opportunities; and
2-5 Whereas, Notable past accomplishments in attaining the goals of the
2-6 Chamber include obtaining the first Federal Building and Post Office for
2-7 Las Vegas in 1924, creating the Livewire Fund to promote Las Vegas in
2-8 1944, leading in the formation of the Las Vegas Valley Water District in
2-9 1945, helping establish the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority
2-10 in 1953 and founding the United Way of Southern Nevada in 1955; and
2-11 Whereas, The Chamber not only serves existing businesses by
2-12 sponsoring over 100 events each year, including seminars, workshops,
2-13 expos, campaigns, general-membership luncheons, new-member
2-14 welcomes, mixers and other gatherings, but also encourages entrepreneurs
2-15 and offers valuable assistance to businesses that are new to the area; and
2-16 Whereas, Efforts abound to encourage leadership on the cutting edge
2-17 of the business world through Chamber programs such as those to respond
2-18 to the special needs of home-based and micro businesses; and
2-19 Whereas, To maintain Las Vegas as the “Entertainment Capital of the
2-20 World,” the Chamber provides information for tourists relating to lodging,
2-21 shopping, transportation, restaurants, recreation, and industry and
2-22 employment, and promotes the city through such ventures as its recent
2-23 negotiations for a 10-year commitment with the National Finals Rodeo and
2-24 an agreement with the sponsors of the Winston Cup; and
2-25 Whereas, The youth of Las Vegas and their education are priorities for
2-26 the Chamber, as demonstrated by its support of school bond referendums,
2-27 scholarship programs, and opportunities such as the Leadership Las Vegas
2-28 program, which identifies high school juniors who have demonstrated
2-29 leadership and, through a 10-month curriculum, prepares them for the
2-30 responsibilities of leadership in the community; and
2-31 Whereas, Residents of Las Vegas have benefited from such
2-32 community-wide efforts of the Chamber as the promotion of improvements
2-33 and upgrades to major traffic artery I-15 and the Courtesy Las Vegas
2-34 program that is designed to instill and inspire a higher and more consistent
2-35 level of courtesy across Clark County; and
2-36 Whereas, It is no accident that for the last 3 years, Inc., a leading
2-37 publication serving entrepreneurs and small business executives, has
2-38 named Las Vegas the best city in the country in which to start a small
2-39 business, and in 1998, Fortune, a national magazine devoted to business
2-40 and finance, selected the city as the second best in the nation in which to do
2-41 business; now, therefore, be it
