Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing attorney and businessman Virgil Henry Wedge.
1-1 Whereas, The people of the State of Nevada lost a prestigious
1-2 attorney, visionary businessman and civic leader with the passing of Virgil
1-3 Henry Wedge on March 4, 2000; and
1-4 Whereas, Virgil Wedge was born in the mining town of Pioche,
1-5 Nevada, on June 24, 1912, to John H. Wedge and Emma Richard Wedge
1-6 and spent his early years on the family ranch in Pahranagat Valley; and
1-7 Whereas, After graduation from Lincoln County High School, Virgil
1-8 Wedge worked in his father’s general store where he learned the trade that
1-9 he would use to put himself through Brigham Young University where he
1-10 was elected student body president in his senior year and from which he
1-11 graduated in 1936; and
1-12 Whereas, Virgil Wedge returned to Nevada where, as a day laborer
1-13 working on the construction of the Supreme Court Building in Carson City,
1-14 he met Senator Patrick McCarran who took an instant liking to Virgil,
2-1 invited him to join his Washington staff and helped him enter George
2-2 Washington University Law School; and
2-3 Whereas, Following his graduation from the University in 1940, Virgil
2-4 Wedge returned to Nevada and created the law firm of McCarran & Wedge
2-5 with the Senator, and, that same year, met Suki Hekking whom he married
2-6 2 years later; and
2-7 Whereas, During World War II, Virgil Wedge served with the FBI and
2-8 upon returning to Nevada in 1946, he resumed his career as an attorney and
2-9 held the office of Reno City Attorney from 1947 to 1951; and
2-10 Whereas, As a member of the law firm presently known as Woodburn
2-11 and Wedge, whose origin stretches back to 1917 and from which he retired
2-12 as Senior Partner, Virgil Wedge’s clients included prosperous corporations,
2-13 prominent individuals and colorful characters in Nevada’s history; and
2-14 Whereas, The seemingly limitless energy and dedication of Virgil
2-15 Wedge urged him into numerous leadership positions in both the civic and
2-16 political arenas, including President of the Washoe County Bar
2-17 Association, Chairman of the Northern Nevada Federal Judicial Merit
2-18 Advisory Commission and Director of the International Academy of Trial
2-19 Lawyers, as well as years of involvement in the Democratic Central
2-20 Committee in Nevada; and
2-21 Whereas, Because of Virgil Wedge’s deep interest in the economic
2-22 development of his state and his participation in many business
2-23 associations that helped to bring prosperity to Northern Nevada, Governor
2-24 Bob Miller proclaimed March 22, 1989, Virgil H. Wedge Day, and 4 years
2-25 later Reno Mayor Pete Sferrazza bestowed a similar honor by declaring
2-26 April 20, 1993, Virgil H. Wedge Day; and
2-27 Whereas, The full life of Virgil Wedge also involved running a herd of
2-28 cattle on a ranch he owned in southwest Reno and membership in
2-29 organizations including the Masons, the Elks and the Prospectors Club; and
2-30 Whereas, Virgil Henry Wedge is survived by his wife, Suki, daughter,
2-31 Suzanne Landucci of San Francisco, son, Virgil A. Wedge of Reno, sister,
2-32 Ruby Ellen Buhler of Sacramento, grandchildren and a great-grandson;
2-34 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly
2-35 Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada
2-36 Legislature express their deepest sympathy to the family of Virgil Henry
2-37 Wedge; and be it further
2-38 Resolved, That Virgil Henry Wedge will long be remembered by his
2-39 fellow Nevadans who have received the benefits of his contributions to this
2-40 state; and be it further
2-41 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy
2-42 of this resolution to Virgil Wedge’s wife, Suki.
