Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Designating April 5, 2001, as Kiwanis Day in the State of Nevada.
1-1 Whereas, Eighty-six years ago the “Benevolent Order Brothers” was
1-2 organized in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915, with the goal of
1-3 having “a mutual exchange of preferred treatment in professional and
1-4 business dealings”; and
1-5 Whereas, The following year the club’s name was changed to
1-6 “Kiwanis,” a form of “Nunc Kee-wanis,” an Otchipew Native American
1-7 phrase which means “We make a noise,” “We have a good time” or “We
1-8 trade or advertise”; and
1-9 Whereas, The members of Kiwanis work toward six principles, (1) the
1-10 primacy of spiritual values, (2) living by the Golden Rule, (3) adhering to
1-11 high standards, (4) engendering strong citizenship, (5) building better
1-12 communities through service, and (6) assisting in the formation of sound
1-13 public opinion; and
2-1 Whereas, Since 1917, the California, Nevada and Hawaii district,
2-2 CAL-NEV-HA, has become the largest district in Kiwanis International;
2-3 and
2-4 Whereas, The State of Nevada is proud of its own divisions, which
2-5 consist of Division 23 of Northern Nevada, Division 28 of Southern
2-6 Nevada and Division 45 of Central Nevada, for their long history of service
2-7 to communities in this state; now, therefore, be it
2-8 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly
2-9 Concurring, That the members of the Nevada Legislature hereby
2-10 designate April 5, 2001, as Kiwanis Day in the State of Nevada, in
2-11 recognition of the dedication toward helping others and the
2-12 accomplishments achieved by the members of Kiwanis while serving their
2-13 communities; and be it further
2-14 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy
2-15 of this resolution to Governor R. Tom Vildibill, Sr., Governor-Elect James
2-16 G. Mason and Lieutenant Governors Marshall Roberson of Division 23,
2-17 Peter Falger of Division 28 and Michael R. Mader of Division 45.
