Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing former lobbyist Lee Smith.

 

   Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature note with sadness the passing of Leland Geary Smith on September 12, 1999; and

1-1    Whereas, Born on August 31, 1928, in Hayward, California, Leland

1-2  Geary Smith lived in California until after his graduation from Stanford

1-3  University, which followed his service in the United States Army during

1-4  World War II; and

1-5    Whereas, A resident of Nevada for over 40 years, Lee Smith had

1-6  access and connections to people at all levels and in all locations

1-7  throughout the state who trusted and supported him when he called on

1-8  them to help with his countless campaigns and charitable causes; and

1-9    Whereas, Lee Smith’s knowledge of politics, his great respect for the

1-10  contribution mining has made in creating and sustaining Nevada and his

1-11  deep conviction in promoting only what was in the best interest of the state

1-12  created the combination that made him a well-known and respected

1-13  lobbyist; and


2-1    Whereas, From the beginning, in his work with the Nevada Mining

2-2  Association, Lee Smith stressed the need for education of legislators,

2-3  regulators and the general public to increase awareness of the importance

2-4  of mining and its economic impact on this state, and to promote this

2-5  understanding, he constantly prodded the mining industry to conduct tours

2-6  of their facilities for both friends and foes of mining; and

2-7    Whereas, Holding a deep commitment to the idea that persons in

2-8  business and industry have knowledge and abilities that are valuable to

2-9  young people throughout their school years, Lee Smith worked to create

2-10  opportunities that would enable industry to contribute to the educational

2-11  system of Nevada; and

2-12    Whereas, Because of his strong belief in the important role of

2-13  education in promoting industry and creating the best life possible for the

2-14  residents of Nevada, Lee Smith was a strong supporter and active

2-15  participant in the Mackay School of Mines, the University of Nevada,

2-16  Reno, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the Desert Research Institute

2-17  and the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows and he also served on

2-18  the President’s Advisory Board of the Community College of Southern

2-19  Nevada; and

2-20    Whereas, One of Lee Smith’s greatest contributions was his

2-21  involvement in the founding and continuing development of the McCaw

2-22  School of Mines in Henderson, an interactive learning center that seeks to

2-23  spark in elementary school students an interest in and enthusiasm for the

2-24  history and economic contributions of mining in Nevada and exposes them

2-25  to the current and varied employment opportunities in the industry of

2-26  mining; and

2-27    Whereas, Lee Smith has been memorialized by a mine named in his

2-28  honor at the AngloGold Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture site, and is survived

2-29  by his sons, John, Steve and Sean, all of Reno, a brother, Jack, of Hayward,

2-30  and two grandsons; now, therefore, be it

2-31    Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-32  Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada

2-33  Legislature extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of

2-34  Leland Geary Smith; and be it further

2-35    Resolved, That Lee Smith will be remembered for his infectious

2-36  laugh, his positive outlook on life and his genuine interest in each person

2-37  he met, as well as for his contributions in joining the worlds of politics,

2-38  industry and education in the State of Nevada; and be it further

2-39    Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

2-40  of this resolution to Lee Smith’s sons, John, Steve and Sean Smith.
