Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing prominent Nevada rancher Brooks Park.

1-1    Whereas, On January 27, 2000, the residents of Nevada were saddened

1-2  by the loss of Brooks Park, a third-generation Nevadan and patriarch of a

1-3  prominent Carson Valley ranching family; and

1-4    Whereas, Brooks Park was born in Reno on August 31, 1912, attended

1-5  Douglas County schools and graduated from the University of Nevada; and

1-6    Whereas, Unity and David Brooks Park journeyed from Canada to

1-7  Nevada, arriving in Mottsville in 1863, before Nevada became a state, and

1-8  began ranching in the valley, while running a large dairy operation at Lake

1-9  Tahoe in the summers; and

1-10    Whereas, Brooks Park, their grandson, carried on the legacy of his

1-11  pioneering family by prospering and living off the land, passing that legacy

1-12  on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and

1-13    Whereas, In 1896, the Park family purchased Friday’s Station, which

1-14  had served as a stage line for Wells Fargo Express and the Pony Express,

2-1  and which was known for the finest hunting and fishing in the Lake Tahoe

2-2  area; and

2-3    Whereas, In 1965, at the site of Friday’s Station, Brooks Park had the

2-4  vision to create Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, which is now known as a

2-5  world-class golf course with spectacular views of Lake Tahoe and the

2-6  surrounding mountains, and which was rated by Golf Digest as one of

2-7  “America’s Top 100 Golf Courses”; and

2-8    Whereas, In 1935, Brooks Park formed the Park Cattle Company and

2-9  continued to expand on his land holdings, becoming the largest property

2-10  owner in Douglas County; and

2-11    Whereas, In 1937, Brooks Park married Jeanne Cardinal, whom he

2-12  had known since grade school and who was a descendant of another

2-13  prominent Nevada family, the Dangbergs; and

2-14    Whereas, In the early 1960s, the Park family leased some of their land

2-15  at Lake Tahoe, which had been used for grazing cattle and sheep, to several

2-16  large casinos which remain on that land today; and

2-17    Whereas, The Carson Valley rancher is fondly remembered by his

2-18  family and friends as a hardworking visionary and environmentalist, with a

2-19  passionate love for ranching and for the land, who once told one of his

2-20  grandchildren that the Carson Valley was the “most beautiful place in the

2-21  world”; and

2-22    Whereas, Bruce Park believes that his father’s most endearing

2-23  qualities were his perseverance, integrity and sense of humor; and

2-24    Whereas, Brooks Park was a devout Catholic and an active member of

2-25  St. Gall Catholic Church; and

2-26    Whereas, Brooks Park was a very proud family man and will be

2-27  greatly missed by his wife, 3 children, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-

2-28  grandchildren; now, therefore, be it

2-29    Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly

2-30  Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada

2-31  Legislature and the residents of Nevada offer their heartfelt sympathy and

2-32  condolences to the family and friends of Brooks Park; and be it further

2-33    Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy

2-34  of this resolution to Jeanne, Brooks’ wife of 63 years, and to his children,

2-35  Bruce Park of Minden, Kay Seeliger of Reno and Jeanne Blach of Elko.
