Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing prominent Carson City optometrist Dr.William Van Patten.
1-1 Whereas, William George Van Patten was born on April 10, 1931, in
1-2 Rochester, New York, to Earl and Dorothy Jeffers Van Patten; and
1-3 Whereas, William grew up in Upstate New York and attended
1-4 Mississippi Southern College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; and
1-5 Whereas, After enlisting in the United States Air Force, William was
1-6 stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, where he met, and on
1-7 May 6, 1954, married, Sharlene Sandin, his wife of 41 years; and
1-8 Whereas, Upon being discharged from the Air Force, William
1-9 attended the University of Nevada, Reno, before entering the Los Angeles
1-10 School of Optometry, from which he graduated in 1959 with a doctorate;
1-11 and
1-12 Whereas, Shortly after his graduation, Dr. Van Patten moved to
1-13 Carson City, opened his optometric practice in August 1959 and continued
1-14 in the practice for 39 years, until retiring in 1998; and
2-1 Whereas, Dr. Van Patten set a standard for excellence in his chosen
2-2 field and endeared himself to thousands of residents of Carson City in the
2-3 capacity of optometrist because of his caring, reassuring manner; and
2-4 Whereas, Many hours of his days not dedicated to his practice were
2-5 spent in community service through such organizations as the Carson City
2-6 School Board, on which he served from 1967 to 1978, and the Rotary Club
2-7 of Carson City, in which he held numerous offices; and
2-8 Whereas, Dr. Van Patten maintained his professional acuity through
2-9 membership in such organizations as the Nevada Optometric Association,
2-10 Nevada State Board of Optometry and American Optometric Association;
2-11 and
2-12 Whereas, All those who knew Bill Van Patten as a friend, public
2-13 servant, doctor, family member or in any other capacity were saddened by
2-14 his death on February 17, 2000; and
2-15 Whereas, William Van Patten is survived by his son, William G. Van
2-16 Patten Jr., and his daughter, Katrina Van Patten-Copoulos, both of Carson
2-17 City, his brothers, James and Robert Van Patten, both of Florida, and his
2-18 grandchildren, Zach and Dion Copoulos and Ronnie Sharlene Van Patten;
2-19 now, therefore, be it
2-20 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly
2-21 Concurring, That the members of the Nevada Legislature express their
2-22 sincerest condolences to all those who miss this outstanding father,
2-23 grandfather, friend, public servant and doctor; and be it further
2-24 Resolved, That this dedicated man who filled so many roles in such a
2-25 distinguished manner will live forever in the hearts of those whose lives he
2-26 touched; and be it further
2-27 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy
2-28 of this resolution to William Van Patten Jr. and Katrina Van Patten-
2-29 Copoulos.
