Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 51–Senator Rawson
Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Encouraging the use of systems to suppress fires in the engine compartments of school buses.
Whereas, Each year school buses throughout the country experience
fire in their engine compartments that are serious enough to require
assistance from fire departments; and
Whereas, A fire in the engine compartment of a school bus can spread
rapidly and may result in injury or loss of life, equipment damage,
personal injury liability, vehicle downtime for repairs or loss of the
vehicle; and
Whereas, Many of the school buses in use in this state and in the
country are used to transport students with physical disabilities; and
Whereas, Time may not be available for the complete evaluation of the
safety of such school buses; and
Whereas, The technology exists for the installation of a clean agent
vehicle thermatic fire extinguisher system in the engine compartment of
school buses; and
Whereas, Such systems can suppress dangerous fires within seconds;
Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly
Concurring, That the Nevada Legislature urges the Nevada Department
of Education and the State Board of Education to encourage school
districts in this state to specify that such systems be included in the
specifications for all purchases of new school buses; and be it further
Resolved, That the Nevada Department of Education and the State
Board of Education are urged to encourage school districts to install such
systems in existing school buses that transport disabled students, to the
extent financial resources are available; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy
of this resolution to the Nevada Department of Education for transmittal to
the State Board of Education and to all school districts in this state.
