Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Commending the students and teachers at Aggie Roberts Elementary School and all other school classes that have proposed legislation and encouraging their continued participation in the legislative process.
1-1 Whereas, Penny Bichsel, fourth grade teacher at Aggie Roberts
1-2 Elementary School in Henderson, in teaching her students about the
1-3 legislative process, sought to encourage her students to feel that every
1-4 person can be a part of that process; and
1-5 Whereas, In learning about Nevada history and state government, the
1-6 students decided to request the Nevada Legislature to make the mustang
1-7 another symbol for the State of Nevada because they believe the mustang,
1-8 with its beauty and mystique, embodies the true spirit of Nevada history;
1-9 and
1-10 Whereas, The students contacted Nevada Legislators through letters,
1-11 phone calls and electronic mail, impressing the Legislators with their
1-12 knowledge of the history and present circumstances of the mustang; and
2-1 Whereas, The students gained support from students of other schools
2-2 and collected over 1,000 signatures from residents who support the concept
2-3 of the mustang being named as the second state animal, the desert bighorn
2-4 sheep being the first; and
2-5 Whereas, The students of Mrs. Bichsel’s class, after much research
2-6 using the Internet, reading books and viewing history films about the
2-7 mustang, were instrumental in having Assembly Bill No. 219 introduced in
2-8 the 71st session of the Legislature; and
2-9 Whereas, The students of Mrs. Bichsel’s class who worked so
2-10 diligently and believed so much in this bill are Shelby Black, Briana
2-11 Bradley, Benjamin Burtrand, Brittany Carlovsky, Chanda Ciaccio,
2-12 Dominick DiFranco, Derek Dunford, Ellen Hall-Patton, Corey Hill, Beau
2-13 Huizinga, Austin Jones, William Klein, Nick Libonati, Lyndsey Luxford,
2-14 Kristen McKoy, Clark Pero, Erik Perron, Alexandra Peterson, Kelly
2-15 Philips, Cydni Schmitter, Sterling Schwartz, Andrew Tschneria, Steven
2-16 Quinones and Kaylee Wells, with Jessica Beyer, Deanna Chase, Jordan
2-17 Dowell, Monty Kaser, Taylor Prince and Kylie Torres representing their
2-18 class so ably in testifying before the Legislature and answering numerous
2-19 questions with knowledge and self-confidence; and
2-20 Whereas, Mrs. Bichsel and her class were accompanied by chaperones
2-21 Mr. Bichsel, Mrs. Burtrand, Mrs. Ciaccio, Mrs. DiFranco, Mr. Dunford,
2-22 Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Huizinga, Mr. Jones, Mrs. Wulz, Mrs.
2-23 Hagen, Mr. Klein, Mrs. Libonati, Mrs. Luxford, Mrs. Nittoly, Mrs.
2-24 McKoy, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Philips, Mrs. Lange, Mrs. Schwartz, Mrs.
2-25 Tschernia and Mrs. Wells; and
2-26 Whereas, These students are representative of the many fine young
2-27 people in our state who take an active interest in their government and who
2-28 are on the way to becoming responsible adults; now, therefore, be it
2-29 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the Assembly
2-30 Concurring, That the members of the 71st session of the Nevada
2-31 Legislature commend these students for their hard work and determination
2-32 which resulted in a bill being introduced before the Legislature and
2-33 encourage other young people to follow their example; and be it further
2-34 Resolved, That the members of this body recognize that there are
2-35 many students in schools throughout this state who are active and
2-36 concerned citizens, and their continued participation in the legislative
2-37 process is encouraged; and be it further
2-38 Resolved, That the residents of this state are proud to be represented
2-39 by young people who are learning that they can be an important part of
2-40 making a difference in their state and in their country; and be it further
2-41 Resolved, That the participation of these conscientious students
2-42 reminds us it is of critical importance that we encourage all Nevadans to
2-43 participate in the democratic process to ensure that the resulting public
2-44 policies are truly representative of all Nevadans; and be it further
2-45 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and transmit a copy
2-46 of this resolution to Mrs. Bichsel and the fourth grade students of Aggie
2-47 Roberts Elementary School.
