Senate Joint RESOLUTION—Requesting Congress to vote on the appointment of Miguel A. Estrada to the United States Court of Appeals.

 

1-1  Whereas, On May 9, 2001, President George W. Bush

1-2  nominated Miguel A. Estrada to fill a vacancy on the United States

1-3  Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit; and

1-4  Whereas, Mr. Estrada’s credentials go uncontested beginning

1-5  with his mastery of the English language and American culture

1-6  following his arrival in the United States as an immigrant from

1-7  Honduras, and including his graduation magna cum laude from

1-8  Columbia University and Harvard Law School; and

1-9  Whereas, Over a year-and-a-half has passed without a vote on

1-10  the floor of the United States Senate on Mr. Estrada’s nomination;

1-11  and

1-12      Whereas, Mr. Estrada has received support from liberal and

1-13  conservative colleagues alike who attest that he is one of the most

1-14  brilliant and effective appellate lawyers in the country; and

1-15      Whereas, Organizations that support Mr. Estrada include the

1-16  League of United Latin American Citizens, the United States

1-17  Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic National Bar

1-18  Association, the Hispanic Business Roundtable, and The Latino

1-19  Coalition; and


2-1  Whereas, Mr. Estrada would be the first Hispanic in the

2-2  country to sit on the United States Court of Appeals for the District

2-3  of Columbia Circuit, an important and prestigious position within

2-4  the nation’s Courts of Appeals; now, therefore, be it

2-5  Resolved by the Senate and Assembly of the State of

2-6  Nevada, Jointly, That the Legislature of the State of Nevada

2-7  respectfully requests our United States Senators in the United States

2-8  Congress to allow a floor vote of the United States Senate on the

2-9  appointment of Miguel Estrada; and be it further

2-10      Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and

2-11  transmit a copy of this resolution to John Ensign and Harry Reid,

2-12  Nevada’s United States Senators; and be it further

2-13      Resolved, That this resolution becomes effective upon

2-14  passage.
