The Committee on Transportationwas called to order at 1:50 p.m., on Thursday, February 6, 2003.  Chairman Vonne S. Chowning presided at the Nevada State Prison, Carson City, Nevada.  Exhibit A is the Agenda.  Exhibit A is available and on file at the Research Library of the Legislative Counsel Bureau.

Chairwoman Chowning brought the meeting to order and asked that the Committee Secretary call the roll. 

 

Warden Budge made a presentation about the prison.  He talked about the history of the prison.  He then commented on current prison staffing levels, inmate morale, and the consistency of spending within approved annual budgets.

 

Afterwards, Mr. Manning gave the members of the Assembly and the Assembly staff a tour of the DMV License Plate Plant, which is located inside of the Nevada State Prison at Carson City.  As the group toured the plant, Mr. Manning pointed out the various functions performed by the inmates who worked at the plant.  Mr. Manning also gave general information about the plant, and he talked about the manufacturing of license plates using the digital process.  At the end of Mr. Manning’s presentation, members of the group were asked to select samples of various types of license plates they could take with them. 

 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:20 p.m.
