AN ACT relating to veterans; providing for the issuance of standard high school diplomas to certain veterans who served in the Armed Forces; requiring the State Board of Education and the Office of Veterans’ Services to establish guidelines for identifying and issuing standard high school diplomas to such veterans; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN
SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
1-1 Section 1. Chapter 389 of NRS is hereby amended by adding
1-2 thereto a new section to read as follows:
1-3 1. Notwithstanding any provision of this title to the contrary,
1-4 a person who:
1-5 (a) Left high school before graduating to serve in the Armed
1-6 Forces of the United States during:
1-7 (1) World War II and so served at any time between
1-8 September 16, 1940, and December 31, 1946;
1-9 (2) The Korean War and so served at any time between
1-10 June 25, 1950, and January 31, 1955; or
1-11 (3) The Vietnam Era and so served at any time between
1-12 January 1, 1961, and May 7, 1975;
2-1 (b) Was discharged from the Armed Forces of the United
2-2 States under honorable conditions; and
2-3 (c) As a result of his service in the Armed Forces of the United
2-4 States, did not receive a high school diploma,
2-5 shall be deemed to have earned sufficient credits to receive a
2-6 standard high school diploma.
2-7 2. A school district may, upon request, issue a standard high
2-8 school diploma to any person who meets the requirements set forth
2-9 in subsection 1. A school district may issue a standard high school
2-10 diploma to such a person even if the person:
2-11 (a) Holds a general educational development credential or its
2-12 equivalent; or
2-13 (b) Is deceased, if the family of the veteran requests the
2-14 issuance of the diploma.
2-15 3. The State Board and the Office of Veterans’ Services shall
2-16 work cooperatively to establish guidelines for identifying and
2-17 issuing standard high school diplomas to persons pursuant to this
2-18 section.
2-19 4. A person to whom a standard high school diploma is issued
2-20 pursuant to this section shall not be deemed to be a pupil for the
2-21 purposes of this title.
2-22 Sec. 2. This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
