Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing longtime advocate for senior citizens, Clarence Edwin “Ed” Fend, Jr.
1-1 Whereas, The members and staff of the Nevada Legislature
1-2 were recently saddened to learn of the death of Ed Fend on
1-3 November 24, 2002; and
1-4 Whereas, Clarence Edwin “Ed” Fend, Jr., was born in Butler,
1-5 Pennsylvania, on May 22, 1928, to loving parents who bestowed
1-6 upon him a strong sense of family and patriotism; and
1-7 Whereas, Shortly after his graduation from high school in
1-8 1946, Ed Fend enlisted in the United States Navy and, over the next
2-1 9 years, advanced through the enlisted ranks and earned the title of
2-2 Electronics Technician First Class; and
2-3 Whereas, Ed Fend’s strong love of country prompted him to
2-4 enroll in Officer Candidate School in May 1955, and he was
2-5 commissioned as Ensign and eventually rose to the rank of Captain;
2-6 and
2-7 Whereas, During his military career, Captain Fend was
2-8 commander of the USS Cree ATF-84 and the USS Sample DE-1048
2-9 and heroically served in the Korean War, the Vietnam War and
2-10 other campaigns, earning him the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious
2-11 Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Navy Good Conduct
2-12 Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon; and
2-13 Whereas, After his retirement from the Navy in 1981, Captain
2-14 Fend advocated for the welfare of senior citizens in Nevada as a
2-15 lobbyist for the American Association of Retired Persons and as
2-16 a legislatively appointed member of the Task Force for the Fund for
2-17 a Healthy Nevada; and
2-18 Whereas, Ed Fend was known for his genteel demeanor and
2-19 his ever-present smile, and was respected for his informed and
2-20 concise testimony regarding issues important to seniors; and
2-21 Whereas, Ed Fend is survived by his wife, Jacki H. Fend, and
2-22 his children, John E. Fend, James I. Fend and Debora B. McElroy;
2-24 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the
2-25 Senate Concurring, That the members of the 72nd Session of
2-26 the Nevada Legislature express their heartfelt sympathy and sincere
2-27 condolences to the family and friends of Captain Clarence Edwin
2-28 Fend; and be it further
2-29 Resolved, That Captain Fend’s memory as a devoted husband,
2-30 father and friend, his dedication to our country and his strong
2-31 advocacy for senior citizens in our State will never be forgotten; and
2-32 be it further
2-33 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and
2-34 transmit a copy of this resolution to Captain Fend’s loving wife,
2-35 Jacki.
