Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Congratulating the City of Henderson upon the celebration of its 50th Anniversary.
1-1 Whereas, The City of Henderson was “born in America’s
1-2 defense” in an effort to supply the United States War Department
1-3 with critical magnesium, the “miracle metal,” for ammunition and
1-4 fighter planes to assist the Allies during World War II; and
1-5 Whereas, In 1947, when vast quantities of magnesium were no
1-6 longer needed, the United States War Asset Administration actually
2-1 offered the area now known as Henderson for sale as war-surplus
2-2 property; and
2-3 Whereas, In an effort to save the area, the Nevada Legislature
2-4 spent a weekend visiting Henderson to evaluate the possibility of the
2-5 State’s administration of the Basic Magnesium Plant; and
2-6 Whereas, Within days of the visit, the Legislators unanimously
2-7 approved a bill giving the Colorado River Commission of Nevada
2-8 the authority to purchase the industrial plant, and on March 27,
2-9 1947, Governor Vail Pittman signed the bill which ultimately saved
2-10 the area from becoming war-surplus property; and
2-11 Whereas, On April 16, 1953, District Judge A. S. Henderson
2-12 signed the official incorporation papers creating the City of
2-13 Henderson, named for United States Senator Charles Belknap
2-14 Henderson; and
2-15 Whereas, The City of Henderson originally included
2-16 approximately 13 square miles with a population of 7,410, and
2-17 today it encompasses nearly 94 square miles of incorporated land
2-18 and has a population in excess of 210,000; and
2-19 Whereas, From its humble beginnings, the City of Henderson
2-20 today is the second largest city in Nevada and is nationally known
2-21 for its premier parks, master-planned residential communities and
2-22 high quality of life, and for the thousands of new residents who
2-23 move there each year, the City of Henderson is truly “living the
2-24 American Dream”; and
2-25 Whereas, The City of Henderson boasts 7 public golf courses,
2-26 an award-winning parks and recreation system with over 40
2-27 developed parks totaling more than 620 acres, senior and recreation
2-28 centers, ball fields, tennis courts, trails and equestrian parks and 10
2-29 aquatic venues throughout the City; and
2-30 Whereas, With nationally accredited Police and Fire
2-31 Departments, Henderson has also been recognized as one of the “50
2-32 Safest Cities in the United States” by Money magazine, one of the
2-33 50 most “kid friendly” towns in America and was recently named as
2-34 one of the best places to retire in America; and
2-35 Whereas, Educational excellence abounds in the City with its
2-36 22 elementary schools, 7 junior high and middle schools, 5 high
2-37 schools, its own newly created state college and a variety of other
2-38 public and private institutions; and
2-39 Whereas, An increasing number of upscale resorts and hotels
2-40 have also discovered the warmth and charm of the City of
2-41 Henderson, including the Hyatt at Lake Las Vegas, Sunset Station,
2-42 the Fiesta, Green Valley Ranch Resort and the newly-opened Ritz
2-43 Carlton, in addition to the already successful businesses within the
2-44 City, including Ethel M Chocolates, Levi-Strauss, L’eggs, Ocean
2-45 Spray and Good Humor-Breyers; and
3-1 Whereas, What began as a small town in 1953, born of
3-2 patriotism and pride, has truly blossomed into one of the premier
3-3 cities in America; and
3-4 Whereas, The City of Henderson is celebrating its 50th
3-5 Anniversary throughout 2003 with patriotic events, parades,
3-6 memorials and other activities commemorating its heritage,
3-7 tremendous progress and continuing high quality of life for its
3-8 residents; and
3-9 Whereas, The City of Henderson, the largest full-service city
3-10 in Southern Nevada, continues to be a shining example of efficiency
3-11 and small town values that have helped build and shape this great
3-12 state; now, therefore, be it
3-13 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the
3-14 Senate Concurring, That the members of the 72nd Session of
3-15 the Nevada Legislature do hereby congratulate the City of
3-16 Henderson on its 50th Anniversary and commend the City for
3-17 providing and maintaining an outstanding quality of life for its
3-18 residents while earning the distinction of becoming the fastest
3-19 growing city in America; and be it further
3-20 Resolved, That the City of Henderson is hereby urged to
3-21 continue its tremendous legacy of service to our nation, our state
3-22 and its residents, and may it continue to grow and flourish as one of
3-23 the bright stars of success in the State of Nevada; and be it further
3-24 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and
3-25 transmit a copy of this resolution to the Mayor of the City of
3-26 Henderson, James B. Gibson, City Council Members Jack Clark,
3-27 Amanda Cyphers, Andy Hafen and Steve Kirk and City Manager
3-28 Phil Speight.
