Assembly Concurrent RESOLUTION—Memorializing Marine hero Lieutenant Frederick Pokorney Jr.

 

1-1  Whereas, The members of the Nevada Legislature and the

1-2  people of the State of Nevada mourn the loss of United States

1-3  Marine Corps First Lieutenant Frederick “Fred” Pokorney Jr.; and

1-4  Whereas, Living with former Nye County Sheriff Wade

1-5  Lieseke and his wife Susie, Fred Pokorney graduated from Tonopah

1-6  High School in 1989, where the 6-foot-7-inch, 220-pound athlete

1-7  excelled at basketball and football; and

1-8  Whereas, A devoted family man, Fred Pokorney met his wife,

1-9  known as “Chelle,” in Washington State, and they became the proud


2-1  parents of daughter Taylor, now 2 1/2 years of age and the spitting

2-2  image of her father; and

2-3  Whereas, After enlisting in the United States Marine Corps,

2-4  Fred Pokorney was named the top recruit at the end of basic training

2-5  and, taking advantage of the military educational benefits, attended

2-6  Oregon State University where he earned a degree in military

2-7  science; and

2-8  Whereas, A field artillery leader for the Headquarters Battery,

2-9  1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary

2-10  Brigade, stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Lieutenant

2-11  Pokorney was deployed to Iraq and died on March 23, 2003, when

2-12  he and some of his fellow Marines were ambushed outside of

2-13  Nasiriyah; and

2-14      Whereas, Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Pokorney

2-15  was promoted posthumously to First Lieutenant and was awarded

2-16  the Purple Heart and will forever be remembered for his bravery and

2-17  dedication to his country; and

2-18      Whereas, Chelle Pokorney called her husband a “gentle giant”

2-19  and said he loved “his family, the Marine Corps and the Oakland

2-20  Raiders”; and

2-21      Whereas, Nevada’s first reported casualty from Operation Iraqi

2-22  Freedom and the first Marine from that military operation to be

2-23  buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Lieutenant Pokorney was

2-24  buried with full military honors; and

2-25      Whereas, Lieutenant Frederick Pokorney Jr. is survived by his

2-26  wife Chelle Pokorney, his daughter Taylor, and his surrogate parents

2-27  Wade and Susie Lieseke; now, therefore, be it

2-28      Resolved by the Assembly of the State of Nevada, the

2-29  Senate Concurring, That United States Marine First Lieutenant

2-30  Frederick Pokorney Jr. be honored for his devotion to his family, his

2-31  state and his country, for which he made the ultimate sacrifice; and

2-32  be it further

2-33      Resolved, That the members of the 72nd Session of the

2-34  Nevada Legislature and the people of our state celebrate the life of

2-35  Lieutenant Pokorney and extend their sincere condolences to the

2-36  family and friends of a true hero; and be it further

2-37      Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and

2-38  transmit a copy of this resolution to Chelle, the beloved wife of

2-39  Lieutenant Pokorney.
