AN ACT relating to dentists; authorizing a dentist licensed to practice dentistry in this state who holds a medical degree to identify himself by that degree under certain circumstances; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

1-1  Section 1. NRS 630.020 is hereby amended to read as follows:

1-2  630.020  “Practice of medicine” means:

1-3  1.  To diagnose, treat, correct, prevent or prescribe for any

1-4  human disease, ailment, injury, infirmity, deformity or other

1-5  condition, physical or mental, by any means or instrumentality.

1-6  2.  To apply principles or techniques of medical science in the

1-7  diagnosis or the prevention of any such conditions.

1-8  3.  To perform any of the acts described in subsections 1 and 2

1-9  by using equipment that transfers information concerning the

1-10  medical condition of the patient electronically, telephonically or by

1-11  fiber optics.

1-12      4.  To offer, undertake, attempt to do or hold oneself out as able

1-13  to do any of the acts described in subsections 1 and 2.

1-14      5.  To use in connection with a person’s name the words or

1-15  letters “M.D.,” or any other title, word, letter or other designation

1-16  intended to imply or designate him as a practitioner of medicine in


2-1  any of its branches, except in the manner authorized by NRS

2-2  630A.220[.] or section 2 of this act.

2-3  Sec. 2.  Chapter 631 of NRS is hereby amended by adding

2-4  thereto a new section to read as follows:

2-5  A dentist licensed pursuant to this chapter who holds a degree

2-6  as a doctor of medicine and is not licensed as a physician pursuant

2-7  to chapter 630 of NRS may identify himself as a doctor of

2-8  medicine and use the letters “M.D.” or any other appropriate

2-9  abbreviation if the dentist clearly identifies himself as a

2-10  practitioner of dentistry.

2-11      Sec. 3.  This act becomes effective upon passage and approval.
