Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Congratulating Dr. Charles R. Goldman for being selected as the recipient of the Nevada Medal given by the Desert Research Institute and sponsored by SBC.

 

1-1  Whereas, Reversing decades of misuse and striving to preserve

1-2  the pristine quality of Lake Tahoe is of great importance to the

1-3  residents of the State of Nevada; and

1-4  Whereas, The recipient of the 2003 Nevada Medal is Dr.

1-5  Charles Goldman, whose single-most important and sustained

1-6  contribution is the 44 years he has spent conducting research on

1-7  Lake Tahoe, which has ultimately increased scientific attention to

1-8  the plight of the Lake over the past decade; and

2-1  Whereas, After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of

2-2  Michigan in Limnology and Fisheries in 1958, Dr. Goldman joined

2-3  the faculty at the University of California, Davis, where he remains

2-4  a Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy

2-5  and serves as Director of the Tahoe Research Group; and

2-6  Whereas, Through his research, most notably at Lake Tahoe,

2-7  Castle Lake in California and Lake Baikal in Siberian Russia, Dr.

2-8  Goldman has proven himself to be an influential and authoritative

2-9  figure in the science of lakes and other freshwater bodies, what he

2-10  tirelessly calls “the queen of the ecological sciences”; and

2-11      Whereas, In 1967, the College of Agricultural and

2-12  Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis,

2-13  established the Tahoe Research Group, headed by Dr. Goldman, in

2-14  an effort to reverse the deterioration of Lake Tahoe and eliminate

2-15  the threat to the Lake’s future; and

2-16      Whereas, Dr. Goldman’s work recently included development

2-17  of artificial wetlands and research on alternatives to conventional

2-18  road salt for de-icing highways, and while continuing to pursue

2-19  basic research on lake dynamics, Dr. Goldman has also been able to

2-20  translate his findings directly to state, national and international

2-21  policy decisions; and

2-22      Whereas, Among his many prestigious awards, Dr. Goldman

2-23  was awarded a Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship from the National

2-24  Science Foundation in 1964, in 1967 the “Goldman Glacier” in

2-25  Antarctica was named after him, and his most prestigious award to

2-26  date was received in 1998, the Albert Einstein World Award of

2-27  Science, awarded annually to a single individual by a group of

2-28  eminent scientists in recognition of scientific and technological

2-29  achievements that have advanced scientific understanding and

2-30  benefited humanity; and

2-31      Whereas, During his long tenure at the University of

2-32  California, Davis, Dr. Goldman served as the Chairman of the

2-33  Division of Environmental Studies from 1988 to 1992, was the

2-34  founding Director of the Institute of Ecology, serving from 1966 to

2-35  1969 and again from 1990 to 1992, and in 1993 Dr. Goldman was

2-36  chosen as Faculty Research Lecturer, the highest honor for campus

2-37  faculty; and

2-38      Whereas, In addition to being recognized for his passion for

2-39  freshwater research, Dr. Goldman is also known as a valuable

2-40  mentor to the students at the University of California, Davis, having

2-41  mentored approximately 90 graduate students and 30 postdoctoral

2-42  researchers; and

2-43      Whereas, The Nevada Medal is an honor conferred by the

2-44  Desert Research Institute of the University and Community College

3-1  System of Nevada and sponsored by SBC in recognition of

3-2  outstanding scientific, engineering and technical achievement; and

3-3  Whereas, Dr. Goldman’s continuing contributions to the area

3-4  of freshwater research, and more specifically his commitment to

3-5  improving the water quality of one of our greatest natural resources,

3-6  Lake Tahoe, have been recognized, and he is being honored this

3-7  year as the recipient of the Nevada Medal; now, therefore, be it

3-8  Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the

3-9  Assembly Concurring, That the members of the 72nd Session of

3-10  the Nevada Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Charles Goldman

3-11  for being named the recipient of the 2003 Nevada Medal given by

3-12  the Desert Research Institute; and be it further

3-13      Resolved, That SBC is hereby commended for its continued

3-14  sponsorship of this medal, which offers well-deserved recognition to

3-15  persons who have demonstrated outstanding scientific, engineering

3-16  and technical achievements; and be it further

3-17      Resolved, That the residents of Nevada will long be grateful to

3-18  Dr. Goldman for his efforts and commitment to improving the water

3-19  quality and beauty of Lake Tahoe; and be it further

3-20      Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and

3-21  transmit a copy of this resolution to Dr. Charles R. Goldman.
