Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Urging the Athletic Directors of the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to consider the feasibility of reuniting the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in the same athletic conference and to schedule the annual rivalry football game between their teams on the Saturday following the observance of Nevada Day.

1-1  Whereas, Nevada is one of only three states that annually

1-2  celebrates its admission to statehood, in 1864, with a state holiday,

1-3  and the Nevada Day Celebration in Carson City is by far the largest

1-4  celebration of this kind, with the Carson City parade and festivities

1-5  dating back to 1938; and

1-6  Whereas, Though not as long-standing a tradition as the

1-7  Nevada Day Celebration, the football rivalry between the University

1-8  of Nevada, Reno, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is

1-9  nevertheless similarly popular and historic; and

1-10      Whereas, The UNR-UNLV football series is a North-South

1-11  “Civil War” which spans 34 years and which has been an annual

1-12  event since 1989; and

2-1  Whereas, The prize for the victorious team in this state

2-2  championship game is the famed Fremont Cannon, college

2-3  football’s largest and most expensive trophy; and

2-4  Whereas, The Fremont Cannon is a replica of a cannon that

2-5  accompanied Lieutenant John C. Fremont, one of America’s

2-6  foremost trailblazers, as he headed west through Nevada in 1843;

2-7  and

2-8  Whereas, Combining the tradition of celebrating Nevada’s

2-9  admission into the Union and the UNR-UNLV football rivalry

2-10  involving the Fremont Cannon, a symbol of exploration of Nevada,

2-11  would be symbolic of the pride that the residents of Nevada feel for

2-12  this state; and

2-13      Whereas, The Saturday following the observance of Nevada

2-14  Day pursuant to NRS 236.015 falls on a weekend that is typically

2-15  reserved for football games between universities within the same

2-16  athletic conference and the University of Nevada, Reno, and the

2-17  University of Nevada, Las Vegas, do not participate in the same

2-18  athletic conference; now, therefore, be it

2-19      Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the

2-20  Assembly Concurring, That the members of the Nevada

2-21  Legislature hereby urge Chris Ault and John Robinson, Athletic

2-22  Directors for the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University

2-23  of Nevada, Las Vegas, respectively, to consider the feasibility of

2-24  reuniting the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of

2-25  Nevada, Las Vegas, in the same athletic conference, and if the teams

2-26  are so reunited in the same conference, to urge the conference to

2-27  schedule the annual football game between the two schools to be

2-28  played on the Saturday following the observance of Nevada Day

2-29  pursuant to NRS 236.015; and be it further

2-30      Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and

2-31  transmit a copy of this resolution to Chris Ault, Athletic Director for

2-32  the University of Nevada, Reno, and to John Robinson, Athletic

2-33  Director for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

2-34  H
