Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Designating April 3, 2003, as Kiwanis Day in the State of Nevada.
1-1 Whereas, Eighty-eight years ago the “Benevolent Order
1-2 Brothers” was organized in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915,
1-3 with the goal of having “a mutual exchange of preferred treatment in
1-4 professional and business dealings”; and
1-5 Whereas, The following year the club’s name was changed to
1-6 “Kiwanis,” a form of “Nunc Kee-wanis,” an Otchipew Native
1-7 American phrase which means “We make a noise,” “We have a
1-8 good time” or “We trade or advertise”; and
1-9 Whereas, The members of Kiwanis work toward six principles,
1-10 (1) the primacy of spiritual values, (2) living by the Golden Rule,
1-11 (3) adhering to high standards, (4) engendering strong citizenship,
2-1 (5) building better communities through service, and (6) assisting in
2-2 the formation of sound public opinion; and
2-3 Whereas, Since 1917, the California, Nevada and Hawaii
2-4 District, CAL-NEV-HA, has become the largest district in Kiwanis
2-5 International; and
2-6 Whereas, The State of Nevada is proud of its own divisions,
2-7 which consist of Division 23 of Northern Nevada, Division 28 of
2-8 Southern Nevada and Division 45 of Central Nevada, for their long
2-9 history of service to communities in this state; now, therefore, be it
2-10 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the
2-11 Assembly Concurring, That the members of the Nevada
2-12 Legislature hereby designate April 3, 2003, as Kiwanis Day in the
2-13 State of Nevada, in recognition of the dedication toward helping
2-14 others and the accomplishments achieved by the members of
2-15 Kiwanis while serving their communities; and be it further
2-16 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and
2-17 transmit a copy of this resolution to Governor Mark W. McDonald
2-18 and Governor-Elect Les G. Wixon, Lieutenant Governor Paul A.
2-19 Richied and Lieutenant Governor-Elect Edward Lynn of Division
2-20 23, Lieutenant Governor Phillip A. Kohen and Lieutenant
2-21 Governor-Elect Elaine Goins of Division 28, and Lieutenant
2-22 Governor George H. Alm and Lieutenant Governor-Elect Steven
