Senate Concurrent RESOLUTION—Commending Dorothy Gallagher for her service to her community, the University and Community College System of Nevada and the State of Nevada.
1-1 Whereas, Dedication to and involvement in lifelong pursuits
1-2 that unselfishly benefit society are traits which distinguish the
1-3 careers of some above others and serve as an inspiration to all; and
1-4 Whereas, Dorothy Sewell Gallagher has so distinguished
1-5 herself in the eyes of family, friends, coworkers and Nevadans
1-6 statewide; and
2-1 Whereas, As a fourth-generation Nevadan, Dorothy
2-2 Gallagher’s endeavors have centered around the best interests of
2-3 students of higher education and, in her own words, around building
2-4 “a system of higher education in Nevada that people can be proud
2-5 of”; and
2-6 Whereas, During her 22 years of outstanding service as a
2-7 member of the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada,
2-8 Dorothy represented 11 rural counties in Nevada and served as
2-9 Chairman of more than a dozen committees of the Board and as
2-10 Chairman of the Board from July 1989 through June 1991; and
2-11 Whereas, Serving during a time of rapid growth of higher
2-12 education in Nevada, Dorothy has played a major role in making
2-13 decisions that have affected the colleges and universities within the
2-14 University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN),
2-15 and especially in developing the Great Basin College in her
2-16 hometown, Elko, Nevada; and
2-17 Whereas, Because of Dorothy’s efforts, the Great Basin
2-18 College became the first college in Nevada, other than the
2-19 universities in the UCCSN, to grant a baccalaureate degree, thus
2-20 enabling the residents of Elko to earn certain baccalaureate degrees
2-21 without having to travel hundreds of miles; and
2-22 Whereas, Dorothy’s support was instrumental in the
2-23 establishment of the Desert Research Institute, the Nevada State
2-24 College in Henderson, Nevada, and the University of Nevada, Reno,
2-25 Fire Science and Emergency Management Academy; and
2-26 Whereas, Because of such achievements, Dorothy has been
2-27 honored with the Sherman Hall of Fame Award, the Trustee
2-28 Excellence Award of the Nevada Hospital Association and
2-29 induction into the Hall of Fame of the Nevada Women’s Fund; and
2-30 Whereas, Dorothy has been praised by those close to her as
2-31 having personal traits of integrity, honesty, professionalism,
2-32 firmness, common sense and the ability to work closely with others
2-33 to achieve a common goal; and
2-34 Whereas, After her years of public service on the Board of
2-35 Regents, Dorothy has retired from the Board, with its demanding
2-36 schedule, to be able to spend more time with her husband, Tom,
2-37 who is a retired dentist, but she will still serve her community as
2-38 evidenced by her recent acceptance of the position of Director of
2-39 Strategic and Community Initiatives at the Northeastern Nevada
2-40 Regional Hospital in Elko; now, therefore, be it
2-41 Resolved by the Senate of the State of Nevada, the
2-42 Assembly Concurring, That the members of the Nevada
2-43 Legislature commend Dorothy Gallagher for her many years of
2-44 service to her community, the University and Community College
2-45 System of Nevada and the State of Nevada; and be it further
3-1 Resolved, That the Legislature recognizes that because of
3-2 Dorothy Gallagher’s work, the system of higher education in
3-3 Nevada has made progress that will be a cornerstone for generations
3-4 of the future; and be it further
3-5 Resolved, That the Nevada Legislature wishes Dorothy further
3-6 success in her new position with the Northeastern Nevada Regional
3-7 Hospital; and be it further
3-8 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate prepare and
3-9 transmit a copy of this resolution to Tom and Dorothy Gallagher and
3-10 to their sons, Frank S. Gallagher, Thomas H. Gallagher and Michael
3-11 H. Gallagher.
